Despite much of the country preparing to watch England play in the Euro 2024 semi-final this evening, the EFL transfer window continues to move quickly with clubs from up and down the pyramid keen to secure their targets ahead of the fast approaching season.Â
The fourth tier is arguably not as strong as in previous years, with big-hitting clubs such as Wrexham and Stockport stepping up into the third tier, whilst the clubs that have replaced them are not as strong (yet) in quality.Â
With that, League Two AFC Wimbledon have reportedly agreed a deal with Leyton Orient to re-sign former player Joe Pigott on loan for the 2024/25 season, according to Football Insider.Â
The 30-year-old spent a number of years with the club between 2018 and 2021, where he made 157 appearances, scoring 54 goals and contributing 13 assists before departing for Ipswich Town.Â
The talented forward has also had spells at Gillingham, Newport County, Luton Town, Charlton Athletic, Cambridge United, Portsmouth, Maidstone United, Bromley and Southend in a career that spans over a decade.Â
To date, he has scored 108 goals across 436 games in all competitions, on average a goal every four games.Â
A solid signing for AFC Wimbledon?
This window appears to be the window of the returning hero. Doncaster Rovers have already secured the signing of Billy Sharp and although on a different level, Pigott is very much a returning fan favourite for AFC Wimbledon.Â
He enjoyed a huge amount of success previously and if he is able to unlock some of his goal-scoring attributes in familiar surroundings then the League Two side may have secured one of the most precious commodities ahead of what is looking set to be a tight and competitive fourth tier.Â
After finishing 10th, just five points behind the play-off spots, the Dons may feel that with the right additions, they can go beyond their 2023/24 finish and Piggott may well be a step in the right direction.Â
