Shrewsbury Town will be hoping to bounce back to League One following their relegation to League Two under new manager Michael Appleton.

The former Charlton Athletic and Lincoln City boss was parachuted in towards the end of the season, but he was unable to turn around their form and pull off a great escape. They are therefore forced to prepare for a campaign in the fourth tier.

Potential Shrewsbury Town Transfer Targets

GK- Christy Pym

Our first player falls in the form of former Mansfield Town goalkeeper Christy Pym, who was released by The Stags at the end of the season. The 30-year-old would bring League Two and League One experience with him, having made over three hundred appearances for Exeter City and Mansfield Town across the two divisions, with the latter seeing the goalkeeper being automatically promoted to the third tier in the 23/24 season.

As well as this, with six clean sheets out of thirty-eight matches in a struggling Mansfield side, Pym shows that he is a strong shot stopper, which Shrewsbury missed in their previous season, and more than good enough for League Two. Appleton’s side could give him the ability to gain back confidence and play at his best after recent struggles.

CB- TJ Eyoma

The second player we are going to be talking about is in the form of former Northampton Town man TJ Eyoma, who was released by the Shoe Army following the conclusion of their 24/25 season. He will be a familiar name for the manager as he  has worked under Appleton before during his time at Sincil Bank.

The 25-year-old would bring a wealth of League One experience with him, having played in League One most of his career at Lincoln and Northampton (137 third tier appearances).

As a free agent it would allow funds to be spent elsewhere.

CM- Lewis Fiorini

Our third option is another former Lincoln man, central midfielder Lewis Fiorini. Who has played 19 matches this season at a combination of Stockport County and Dundee United, although he has struggled to get game time in the 24/25 campaign.

With a 71.4% dribble success, Fiorini holds the ability to contribute both in possession and in an attacking state. As well as this, the 23-year-old is also able to contribute defensively, winning 42.9 percent of his tackles and 42.6% of his duels whilst also making 13 recoveries. These stats will contribute to limiting the amount of goals conceded as well as scoring more goals, which Shrewsbury lacked last season.

He is of cause Michael Appleton’s favourite player, having signed him on three separate occasions (Lincoln City, Blackpool and Charlton Athletic). But remarkably has only played 53 games under him, due to injury at the Seasiders and injury mixed with Appleton’s short tenure at the Addicks.

The Scottish youth international would be joining an experienced midfield base that includes players like Alex Gillead, Harrison Biggins, and John Marquis. These players could further develop Fiorini’s skills and make him a better player during his loan move. Overall, this would be a good move for both clubs as he will have the opportunity to have game time, and Shrewsbury will have more quality and depth.

Striker- Tyler Walker

Our penultimate option is Tyler Walker who is yet again another former Lincoln City man and was released. The striker played just eight matches in his loan spell at Wealdstone this season. He has struggled for gametime for an extended period having only made eight appearances for the Imps after returning to them in 2023 due to serious injuries that also plagued his time at Coventry City. Walker holds the ability to contribute in a direct attacking state and in a contributing role. With three goals and a single assist.

If the striker was to sign for Shrewsbury, he would bring a goal-scoring threat whilst also increasing Town’s depth and quality of strikers with an experienced frontman who is experienced in League Two.

Striker- Chris Long

Our fifth and final player comes in the form of Chris Long, who is available on a free as Crewe Alexandra did not renew his contract following the 24/25 campaign. Also, after having a successful four seasons at The Alex, scoring 30 goals in 104 appearances.

The striker could be used in a striker partnership at the Salop, although he has the potential to become a goalscoring force in League Two, which can be seen during his time at his former club.
