AFC Wimbledon secured promotion to League One through the fourth-tier play-offs and despite securing five new arrivals this summer, they have yet to address their issues in attack until now, which seen them score the fewest goals of any side in the top nine.
It is an area where additions should be expected, with a heavy reliance on Matty Stevens for goals in League Two last season.
Two of the Dons’ top four scorers have also now departed this summer, with Josh Neufville and James Tilly joining League One rivals Bradford City and Wycombe Wanderers, respectively.
AFC Wimbledon Secure Promotion But Improvements Needed in Attack
The 1-0 win over Walsall at Wembley that secured their place in the third tier will be all that matters, but a deeper dive into the team’s attacking statistics highlights that there are significant improvements needed if they are to retain a place in League One in 2025/26.
AFC Wimbledon ranked 17th for big chances created in the fourth tier last season, significantly below relegated Carlisle United. In addition to a lack of creativity in the final third, the team ranked in the top eight for both shots per game and efforts on target per game, indicating a lack of prolificacy in front of goal when opportunities did present themselves to the forward players.
Omar Bugiel struggled to provide an adequate source of goals alongside Stevens in attack, and with chief creator Tilley now also departed, there is a requirement for a fresh face in the front two.
Reports are now stating that a loan move for an exciting prospect is ongoing to potentially solve the lack of firepower in attack.
Dons in Talks Over Loan Deal For Addicks Forward
Another club that prevailed in a play-off final was Charlton Athletic, the Addicks securing a return to the championship for the first time since 2019/20.
However, forward Daniel Kanu, who had demonstrated his immense potential by scoring ten goals in the 2023/24 campaign, failed to build on his goalscoring exploits and found his game time limited.
The 20-year-old made just five starts in his 17 appearances for the Addicks in League One. Having struggled for game time last season, it is unlikely he would see much more minutes in the Championship, and this has prompted AFC Wimbledon to open talks with the Addicks over a loan move for the player, according to Football League World.
The forward has been capped five times by Sierra Leone and has the potential to be a regular on the scoresheet in the third tier. A loan move to the Dons, who require a spark in attack, may be ideal for all parties. He should get more regular game time under Johnnie Jackson before returning to Charlton Athletic.
Having signed a new deal in 2024 that runs through to the summer of 2027, there is the opportunity to return to the Addicks and stake a claim for first-team football.
