Aldershot Town are reportedly in talks to extend the contract of midfielder Dejan Tetek following his impressive performances for the club, as confirmed by journalist Pete O’Rourke.
The 21-year-old has had an impressive stint since arriving from League One side Reading but is now in line to receive a new contract with the National League side as they continue to push for the top seven.
Why are talks commencing?
Upon signing for the club in October, the defensive midfielder signed a short-term contract with the National League side, but following his impressive performances, this is set to be extended.
Since arriving at the Shots, Tetek has made eight appearances for the club, where he has managed to impress with his defensive contributions.
During his eight matches, the midfielder has managed an average pass success rate of 88%, whilst also averaging 5.9 ball recoveries and 2.2 interceptions making him one of the National League’s top defensive midfielders so far this season.
Therefore, it is no surprise to see Aldershot Town desperate to extend the contract of the defensive midfielder.
How will this move affect the team?
By offering the midfielder an extended contract with the National League side, will provide a morale boost for the squad knowing that one of their strongest defensive players is likely to extend his stay with the side.
Aldershot Town currently sit seventh in the National League, one point ahead of Gateshead although they have played two games more than Rob Elliott’s side.
A morale boost ahead of the club’s remaining 14 league matches could be exactly what they need to confirm their place in the playoffs.
Is this the correct decision?
Based solely on his defensive statistics so far this season, it seems to be a no-brainer that Aldershot Town will be desperate to extend his contract beyond the end of the season.
With Josh Stokes now only on loan following his January move to Bristol City, the club need to retain their key players knowing there is still a possibility that the Shots may be in the EFL next season.
