Bayern Munich have discussed Burnley manager Vincent Kompany as a candidate for their soon-to-be vacant managerial position, as revealed by Fabrizio Romano.
It has been a disappointing season for the Bundesliga outfit as they were beaten to the title by Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen, who won the league undefeated this campaign. With Leverkusen in the final of the Europa League, they are set to make history should they win that trophy, marking an entire season undefeated in all competitions.
Munich saw a season without trophies under Thomas Tuchel, who announced his departure months prior to the end of this season. This failure to win a trophy was the first time for the German giants since the 2011/12 season.
Bayern Munich looking for Tuchel replacement.
Tuchel announced in February that he would be leaving the German side when they were still in the hunt for plenty of silverware, including the league title and the Champions League. Defeat to Leverkusen would see Alonso’s side extend their lead at the top of the table, and despite a valiant performance, they were seen off by Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of Europe’s elite.
The side had failed to reach an agreement with the former Chelsea boss, but they were hopeful of the German performing a U-turn with rumours of that happening. However, Tuchel confirmed his exit in his conference before the Hoffenheim game, stating it was his final press appearance as Bayern Munich manager.
Bayern Munich’s managerial merry-go-round.
One reason the side was hopeful of a U-turn from the German was due to their failure to secure a manager past this season. One such linked target was Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso, who committed his future to his current club after links to Munich emerged. Alonso was also linked to Liverpool to replace the outbound Jurgen Klopp.
Other targets for the Bundesliga giants included Julen Lopetegui, who is set to succeed David Moyes at West Ham United and Oliver Glasner, who took over at Crystal Palace. Meanwhile, Thomas Tuchel could be making his return to the Premier League, as he is linked with Manchester United amidst uncertainty surrounding the future of Erik ten Hag.
With several targets still in consideration for the Munich job after former United coach Ralf Rangnick confirmed he had declined the position at the Allianz Arena, Burnley’s Vincent Kompany is reportedly one name considered to take over from Tuchel.
Why is Kompany a target for Bayern Munich?
The Belgian enjoyed an illustrious career in his playing days, becoming a serial winner with Manchester City. Following the end of his playing days, he returned to Belgium, taking up a managerial position with Anderlecht, which allowed him to take up a player-manager role.
However, his tenure as head coach would not last long as the club began his first season with one of their worst records opening a season since 1998. The Belgian would step down from his managerial duties to focus on his duties as a player.
Kompany was appointed Burnley manager in 2022 after their relegation from the Premier League. His first season in charge could be considered a great success, leading them to victory in the Championship and securing promotion to the Premier League. However, this season has not been as much of a success, with the side being relegated once again from the top flight, his brand of football has not paid off the same in the Premier League.
While his brand of possession-based attacking football has been criticised by many in the Premier League, with it claimed that it would never pay off with a side like Burnley. Such a statement is hard to disagree with that statement with few standout players in the side. However, that type of football Bayern Munich’s squad is excellent at playing, adopted by many European giants, meaning Kompany could fit in well at the Allianz Arena.
