Arsenal have reportedly had a loan proposal for talented striker Igor Jesus rejected by Botafogo, who are reluctant to let the 23-year-old leave during January.
Botafogo signed Igor Jesus from UAE club Shabab Al-Ahli in July 2024, with the striker having spent four years at his former club. He was electric in the UAE Pro League, providing 50 direct goal contributions in only 66 games, winning one league title, two UAE Supercups and one league cup with the sidei.
Jesus has had a slower start since joining the Brazilian Serie A compared to his form in the UAE, only managing eight direct goal contributions for Botafogo in 32 appearances. Despite this, he has already added more to his accolades, with the Brazilian side winning the Copa Libertadores and the league title in 2024.
Arsenal’s Offer:
It has been reported that Arsenal have had a loan proposal rejected for Igor Jesus, with the London club offering an obligation to buy the striker for €20 million in summer 2025. Despite this initial rejection, it has been said that Botafogo would not oppose negotiating a permanent transfer during the January transfer window for the Brazilian.
Who is Igor Jesus?
Igor Jesus is a tall, physical striker who is comfortable dropping deep into midfield and retaining possession with his back to goal. He offers an outlet for long balls from the goalkeeper, with excellent strength to hold off defenders.
In addition to his strength, he is a powerful runner and an excellent passer of the ball, which benefits his playstyle when he drops deeper and waits for his teammates to make runs in behind the defence. He has also looked comfortable drifting out wide, specifically more to the right, and finishing from tight angles.
Why Does Arsenal Want Him?
The Gunners are facing injury woes, with star Bukayo Saka sidelined likely until March and Ethan Nwaneri reportedly picking up a muscular injury after Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion. Alongside these injuries, a sickness bug also prevented Kai Havertz from playing the last two games.
Arsenal are likely looking for reinforcements up front, with a profile like Igor Jesus’ seemingly desirable for Mikel Arteta. Although some may argue that the Brazilian does not differ much from what Havertz and Gabriel Jesus can offer, the 23-year-old is still a raw talent with potential. It is unknown whether Arsenal will offer again and comply with Botafogo’s request for a permanent transfer offer in January or if the London club will look for targets elsewhere.
