Arsenal slipped to defeat against Liverpool in the USA earlier this week and one of the players involved could be set for a departure to League One before the summer window concludes.

Mikel Arteta’s side slipped to a 2-1 defeat against their Premier League counterparts after Mo Salah and Fabio Carvalho gave Liverpool a comfortable lead before Kai Havertz halved the deficit.

However, it appears as though one player from that Arsenal side is firmly on the radar of a League One side ahead of a potential switch.

Hein to Barnsley

According to a report from the Barnsley Chronicle, Arsenal goalkeeper Karl Hein is on the clubs shortlist ahead of a potential loan switch to Barnsley, competing alongside Ben Killip for the number-one shirt this season.

Hein worked with current Barnsley goalkeeping coach James Bittner at fellow League One side Reading in 2022, adding a likely explanation behind the interest.

How did he fare last season?

The 22-year-old experienced a difficult 2023/24 campaign, featuring just four times in all competitions for Arsenal, with three of those arriving in the Premier League 2 conceding seven goals.

His other appearance came during an EFL Trophy match against Swindon Town in which Hein’s side won on penalties.

He did, however, feature three times for his native Estonia as well as captaining his national team during a 2-1 defeat against Finland in March.

Is this a good move?

Barnsley lost Brad Collins to Championship side Coventry City last summer whilst loanee Liam Roberts has since completed a free transfer to Millwall.

Hein has EFL experience and has worked with the goalkeeping coach previously, which will benefit his development due to the familiarity of working with someone who knows his strengths and weaknesses.

Game time is unlikely to be gained at Arsenal this season, meaning an exit whether on loan or permanent is likely to be the best thing for his development.
