Arsenal are close to ending their long wait to sign a new striker, with positive talks ongoing with player and club.
The Gunners finished this season trophyless, extending their wait for silverware to five years.Â
Their last piece of silverware came at the end of the 2019/20 season. Striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored two goals in the FA Cup final as they beat Chelsea to claim Mikel Arteta’s first, and to date only, trophy for the club.
Now a new striker could be leading the line for the Gunners as they look to end their trophy wait.Â
Arsenal closing in on Benjamin Šeško
Football transfers expert Fabrizio Romano has shared that talks between Arsenal and Benjamin Šeško are advancing.
On his X account, Romano said:
“Understand Arsenal are now advancing in negotiations for Benjamin Å eÅ¡ko after initial concrete talks reported last week.
“Discussions underway and proceeding well between all parties involved, player & clubs.
“No agreement yet now or expected this weekend; but advancing.”
No fee has been mentioned, but it’s likely to be a big investment to bring Å eÅ¡ko to London.
Å eÅ¡ko’s scoring continuesÂ
In the Bundesliga this season, Šeško scored 13 goals for RB Leipzig and was the top scorer for the team. His 13 goals eclipsed his xG of 9.89, and he finished the season with a goal conversion of 19%.
By hitting double figures again this season, Å eÅ¡ko has now scored 10+ in three straight league seasons. In fact, he’s only failed to score double figures in one season where he played 20+ games.
His best scoring return campaign came in the 2020/21 season for FC Liefering in the Austrian 2. Liga. In that season, he scored 21 goals in 30 games.
In his two seasons at Leipzig, the striker has scored 27 goals in 64 games – a goal-per-game ratio of 0.42.
Is he the answer?
In recent years, Arteta has ignored calls from fans to sign a striker. He’s opted to play Kai Havertz in that position and although that hasn’t been a complete failure, when the German got injured, their lack of options was glaring.
Å eÅ¡ko could be the answer to Arsenal’s lack of attacking options. He’s a classic striker: direct, powerful, and knows where the back of the net is.
With the right service from stars like Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard, and Gabriel Martinelli, the Slovenian could easily become a star in the Premier League.
The attacker is just 22, which gives the Gunners plenty of time to shape their team around Šeško. He can be a long-term asset and hopefully for Arsenal fans, score goals that leads them to trophies.
