Back-to-Back Promotion Winning Player with Wrexham Links up with Fellow League One Club

Rotherham United are allowing former Wrexham defender Callum McFadzean to train with the club to maintain his fitness whilst looking for a new club according to manager Steve Evans.

The 30-year-old left the Welsh side in June as a free agent and has been considering where his next step will take him after helping his side achieve back-to-back promotions from the National League to League One.

He spent two years at the club making 52 appearances during his time in Wales. McFadzean has also been on the books of Bury, Sunderland, Plymouth Argyle, Sheffield United, Burton Albion, Stevenage, Kilmarnock and Chesterfield amongst others as well as making youth appearances for both England and Scotland at international level.

However, despite training with the Millers the defender will not be joining the club according to boss Steve Evans speaking to the Rotherham Advertiser;

“Callum’s not coming into the club. We’re just providing training facilities. He’s a Sheffield boy and we’re pleased to do him a favour.”

The Free Agent Minefield

Clubs are continually monitoring the free agent market, however at times it can be a minefield especially the deeper into the season you go. Often a manager will opt to bring in an unattached player to fill a gap, but if he if not up to speed or lacking fitness it could end up more damaging than just playing a youth player for example that has had a full pre-season.

Evans allowing McFadzean to train with the club could give him a much needed advantage to those that are looking at defensive additions. Despite playing back-up for the majority of last season for Phil Parkinson’s side he has been part of a squad that won back-to-back promotions and could offer some additional experience to those in League Two looking to take a step to the next level.
