Barnsley have confirmed the news that they have recalled forward Aiden Marsh from his loan spell at National League side York City, according to a statement on York’s club website.

The 20-year-old arrived at the National League side in September becoming the club’s latest addition after an action-packed summer which saw several big names such as Callum Howe, Tyler Cordner and Dipo Akinyemi join the club.

Marsh made five appearances for Barnsley so far this season, scoring twice and assisting another which led to the club opting to allow him to maintain his game time away from the club.

However, during his nine appearances for the club, Marsh had a difficult time trying to get ahead of Akinyemi and failed to find the back of the net in any of his six National League appearances.

York City may have had a busy summer transfer window, with almost an entirely new squad arriving at the club but Neal Ardley’s side have struggled for success so far, sitting 22nd in the standings, 11 points outside of the play-off places.

Meanwhile, Barnsley began the campaign with a flying 7-0 victory against Port Vale but have since suffered a mixture of results including a shock FA Cup draw against Non-League side Horsham. The club sit fifth in League One, five points behind the automatic promotion places and are next in action on Saturday when they travel to Derby County.

Upon news of his return to Barnsley, York City posted a short goodbye message to Marsh on their website stating…

The Club wishes Aiden well in his future endeavours and thanks him for his efforts.’

Writer’s View

Seeing how positively Marsh started the 2023/24 campaign, makes it even more surprising that his spell at York City hasn’t managed to follow suit.

Despite the club having the in-form Dipo Akinyemi, winning football matches has proven to be a challenge for Neal Ardley’s side so far and a forward like Aiden Marsh could have restored their form to winning ways.
