Barrow have won the race to sign former Salford City defender Theo Vassell who has been a key component of The Ammies’ squad since arriving in 2021, making over 100 appearances for the club who finished in 20th place in League Two last season.
Barrow continue to impress in the fourth tier and followed up their ninth-place finish in 2022/23 with an eight-placed finish in 2023/24, narrowly missing out on a spot in the playoffs by a single point.
Theo Vassell is a Leading League Two Defender
The 27-year-old made 27 starts for Salford in the fourth tier last season in what was a difficult campaign for the club but it was the 2022/23 campaign where he displayed his key attributes. He was dribbled past on the least number of occasions of all central defenders who made more than 25 appearances and no defender was fouled more than him under the same criteria, highlighting that he was often targeted as the player to stop getting on the ball.
His talent on the ball cannot be understated either, ranking third in 2022/23 for accurate short passes per game and ranked first for the least amount of incomplete short passes using the same criteria for central defenders in the fourth tier. These attributes are key in the modern game where defenders are expected to be comfortable on the ball, in addition to the traditional defensive skillset.
Theo Vassell added three goals in a season that highlighted him as a star player at this level and he has been a regular at National League level, representing Gateshead, Chester and Wrexham in the fifth tier of English football. The former Stoke City academy product played for Macclesfield and Port Vale in League Two at various points throughout his career.
Stephen Clemence Ushers in New Barrow Era With Statement Signings
They have signed experienced winger Connor Mahoney from Huddersfield after the 27-year-old impressed on loan at Gillingham in League Two. Mahoney has been a regular in the Championship throughout his career, making over 100 appearances at that level and he is an excellent signing for Barrow.
Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider has now confirmed that the Ammies have also won the race for Theo Vassell. The signings of Vassell and Mahoney are exceptional deals with clubs such as Lincoln City and Mansfield reportedly beaten to the signature of the defender.
Barrow have punched above their weight since securing their place in League Two at the end of the Covid-disrupted 19/20 season. They finished 21st and 22nd in their first two campaigns but have developed into a club capable of competing with the top sides and new manager Stephen Clemence has been busy in the transfer window to help them to the next level.
23-year-old defender Sam Barnes has joined from Blackburn looking to build his career at senior level and 20-year-old prospect Katia Kouyate has made the move from Everton’s underage squad. Andy Dallas has joined on loan from Barnsley having gained experience with Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership last season and goalkeeper Wyll Stanway has signed permanently from Chester.
