Bayern Munich Target Move For Championship Goalkeeper

Bayern Munich

Vincent Kompany will attempt to bring Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford with him to Bayern Munich, according to a report from the Football Insider.

Football Insider previously reported that Liverpool and Newcastle United were set to battle it out for the Englishman’s signature this summer, however, it now appears that Bayern Munich are set to join the race for the goalkeeper.

Despite losing his place as Burnley’s first-choice keeper towards the end of the season, Trafford was called up by Gareth Southgate to be part of his 33-man EURO 2024 provisional squad.

Trafford to reunite with Kompany?

It was Kompany who signed Trafford for Burnley from Manchester City for a fee potentially rising to £19m in July 2023, making him the third most expensive British goalkeeper in history.

Trafford kept just two clean sheets in his 28 appearances in his debut Premier League season (via Transfermarkt) as the Clarets suffered relegation to the Sky Bet Championship, however, the report from the Football Insider claims that Trafford has drawn the attention of several top clubs.

Burnley are said to have placed a £20m price tag on the 21-year-old, and Kompany is keen to bring Trafford to Munich having been named as Bayern’s new head coach last week.

Bayern looking for Neuer succession plan

Bayern Munich have one of the best goalkeepers in world football in Manuel Neuer, however, the German international is now 38 years old and has only managed to play 35 games across the last two Bundesliga seasons due to a lower leg fracture he suffered in December 2022.

To add to this, Bayern’s second-choice goalkeeper Sven Ulreich is now 35 years old, therefore it comes as no surprise that a new young goalkeeper appears to be high on Kompany’s list of demands this summer.

Will Burnley be tempted to sell?

Much was promised from Trafford after his move from Manchester City, however, just one season later it appears he could already be on his way out of Turf Moor.

Although, Burnley were starting 25-year-old Arijanet Muric towards the end of the season, therefore if a healthy transfer fee of £20m for Trafford presented itself, Burnley could be tempted to sell and reinvest the money into improving the squad as the Clarets look to regain promotion back to the Premier League next season.
