Birmingham City Attempt To Secure Player of the Year

Birmingham City have been revealed as the club intent on competing with Championship sides Sheffield United and Preston North End for the signature of Peterborough United star Harrison Burrows.

It was revealed by Posh chief Darragh MacAnthony that three Championship sides and a “massive” League One club were in the race for the League One Player of the Year.

However, an update has now emerged from Darren Witcoop suggesting that the third-tier club is Birmingham City.

Sheffield United had been closing in on a deal, but the proposed take-over has opened the door for other potential suitors.

The Blues have reportedly got a £20 million budget to use this summer in pursuit of an immediate return to the Championship, having already secured the league’s top scorer Alfie May from Charlton. If they are able to also take the Player of the Season, it could be a serious show of intent.

Birmingham City Buying Their Way to Success?

The Blues are willing to flex their financial muscles this summer, with their spending to date already likely to eclipse five or six of the lowest spenders combined. It does however present a risk, the pressure is on, the club have to get promotion to the second tier at the first time of asking or they could land themselves in serious trouble.

One season in a lower division will not likely impact the revenue too much, but if they find themselves stuck like Portsmouth, Derby or Ipswich it could take a serious hit into their future business.

The huge crowds and the big stadium will feel like a cup final for many sides in League One who will be more than willing to up their game to topple their big spending opponents. The manager is highly rated but unproven at this level and it remains to see if he can make the most of the talent at his disposal.
