Birmingham City boss Chris Davies has given an update on the ongoing transfer situation surrounding Paik Seung-ho after he was linked to several clubs during the summer transfer window.
Birmingham had an incredibly busy window, stealing the headlines by smashing the League One record purchase by bringing Jay Stansfield from Premier League side Fulham as well as adding the third tier’s top scorer Alfie May. They also added a number of big money signings from abroad prompting some jealous reactions from some opposition fans.
However, as the club were preparing for the upcoming season there was also noise on potential outgoings. The prospect of having a season in the third tier, for those with ambitions of playing much higher concerned some, and if the Blues failed to gain promotion at the first time of asking it could have left them stuck for a period in what is ultimately a short career.
One such player that was the subject of these murmurs was Paik Seung-ho who only joined the club in the January transfer window. It was reported at the time that the Jorean was attracting interest from Championship sides Leeds United and Sheffield United amongst others, with suggestion that bids were rejected as late as deadline day for the talented player.
The window closed with no move materialising meaning that the player would have to wait until at least the winter window to make a move out of the club if he still wished to move on.
What has been said on the Birmingham City man?
Davies discussed with Birmingham Live the summer interest in the player and his clear intentions on what the future would hold;
“There would have definitely been interest in him but I was very consistent all along that he was going to be a key player this season and in future years. He’s an excellent player and an excellent character. In my mind there was no real threat of losing him. He has been excellent so far and needs to maintain those standards.”
Are Birmingham City Champions elect?
Those hoping for a stuttering or slow start from the relegated side due to the squad turnover and number of stars looking to settle into a new league… have been left disappointed. The club sit joint top of the table only behind Wrexham on goal difference, having played a game fewer. They are the only side in the division yet to be beaten and sent an ominous sign to those doubting them by routinely dispatching the Hollywood owned side 3-1 with a dominant display.
Their star signings have taken to the league like a duck to water, Alfie May and Jay Stansfield already have seven league goals between them in what could prove to be a dangerous partnership.
At this stage it is hard to see how they can be stopped, even injuries with their squad depth can be dealt with easily. It would not be a surprise to see Birmingham City top of the tree at Christmas time by some distance.
