League One leaders Birmingham City‘s preparations for the EFL Trophy Final at Wembley has suffered a major blow as one of their forward options has picked up an injury in training this week.
The Blues are set to take over 40k fans to the capital to face fellow League One side Peterborough United, in what could well be a league and cup double for the run-away leaders.
However, Birmingham City‘s summer signing Emil Hansson has picked up an injury in training, casting doubt on his fitness for the final.
This is not the first injury the Swedish forward has picked up, having already suffered from muscular issues throughout the season.
What has Chris Davies said on the Birmingham City injury?
Speaking to Birmingham Live, Davies confirmed the Birmingham City injury news:
“Frustratingly for Emil and us, he picked up a bit of a knock in training the day before the game, so that’s disappointing.”
“It’s not a season-ender, it will be a few weeks maximum. We’ll have to see how he goes in the next few days.”

Davies also took the time to update fans on the situation of club captain Krystian Bielik and Taylor Gardner-Hickman, who have missed several games between them.
In addition to Hansson‘s setback, Davies provided updates on other injured players:
-
Krystian Bielik, the club captain, is managing a minor niggle. While not serious, it is something the team is monitoring.
-
Taylor Gardner-Hickman is close to returning to training and is expected to rejoin the squad early next week.
“Taylor is close to training with the team again,”
“That is scheduled for early next week so he’s pretty much there, more or less, but then you need to build up again.
“Krystian Bielik has just been managing a niggle. It’s nothing major but it’s something we’re working with him on.”

League One Champions and Record Breakers?
Ordinarily, for a side that is suffering from injuries to their club captain, one of their summer signing forwards, and a vital utility man, you’d be questioning whether it could potentially derail their form. However, for Birmingham City, they have been clever in their recruitment, not just prioritising the best possible XI on the pitch, but also ensuring their squad depth is as good as it possibly can be for the League One campaign.
With rule changes and amendments coming in next season, it bodes well that the young stars have had a season to settle in with each other alongside Chris Davies. Whilst their squad will need some additions to compete at the top of the Championship next season, they do find themselves in a good position to go again once the next campaign starts.
Could they break the League One record then do the same as Ipswich Town and find themselves in the Premier League in the 2026/27 season? I wouldn’t bet against it.
