Blackburn Rovers Line Up Move For Premier League Winger

blackburn

Blackburn Rovers are reportedly considering a swoop for Crystal Palace winger Franco Umeh-Chibueze on loan this summer, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

The 19-year-old played a starring role for Crystal Palace’s U21s as well as making his first-team debut but is now a summer target for John Eustace’s side ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

How did Umeh-Chibueze fair last season?

Umeh-Chibueze made 16 appearances for Crystal Palace’s U21s last season in the Premier League 2 as well as making two additional appearances in the EFL Trophy for the Eagles.

During that time, the 19-year-old scored nine goals and provided an additional assist for the Eagles. He also made several appearances in the club’s match-day squad in the Premier League last season but is yet to make his debut.

How could this signing benefit Blackburn Rovers?

Blackburn confirmed their Championship survival on the final day of the 2023/24 season by beating Leicester City, courtesy of Golden Boot winner Sammie Szmodics.

However, with Szmodics facing an uncertain future due to rising Premier League interest, there is going to be a gap in the attacking positions next season.

Although Umeh-Chibueze is unlikely to be Szmodics’ replacement, the youngster has the ability to operate as a winger on either side or an attacking midfielder which improves the squad depth for John Eustace’s side next season.

Would this move have a positive effect on his development?

If Blackburn Rovers opt to sell Sammie Szmodics this summer, the door is likely to be open for several attacking players to join the Championship which could be music to Umeh-Chibueze’s ears.

This is because there is likely to be an increase in first-team football which will also persuade Crystal Palace to allow the winger to depart on loan this summer.

Playing in a Championship side with regular first team football will have a positive affect on his development because it will allow him to improve his current abilities. Similarly, playing in the English second tier is likely to put him in international contention moving forward.
