Championship side Blackburn Rovers may face a challenge from ambitious duo Lincoln City and Blackpool should they return for one of their targets this upcoming window.
Blackburn Rovers sit 19th in the second tier and have struggled to put together a consistent string of form this season. Manager Valérien Ismaël may have to look to the January transfer window to improve his squad if he wants to avoid being sucked into a relegation battle.
One potential option could be a target that they showed an interest in 12 months ago.
Lincoln City and Blackpool Move for Blackburn Rovers Target Eoin Kenny
In December 2024, Alan Nixon linked Blackburn Rovers with Kenny following Dundalk’s poor season. Whilst the interest did not materialise into a formal offer a change in circumstances could reignite a potential deal.
Eoin Kenny has recently left Dundalk, meaning he can be signed as a free agent, eliminating the upfront fee. This has alerted Lincoln City and Blackpool to his availability according to FLW.
Michael Skubala’s side have a history of signing Irish players with the likes of Jack Moylan and former Imps Sean Roughan, Danny Mandroiu all crossing the Irish sea to come to Lincolnshire. They are joined by Blackpool with Ian Evatt keen to add to his side, having taken over from Steve Bruce earlier in the season.
There is also reported interest from Scottish clubs and clubs from Europe, but the opportunity to play in the Championship may be too good an offer to turn down.
Can Lincoln City or Blackpool win the Race for Eoin Kenny?
League One is an attractive proposition, the quality and standards across the division has risen year on year. Clubs like Lincoln City know their place in the pecking order, so are set up to pick-up low-cost players with potential and develop them into stars of the future.
Whilst the Championship may be tempting, it may be too big a step too soon. At 19 there is no guarantee of gametime or a pathway to first team action which could result in a stagnant period in his career. Whilst at Lincoln and Blackpool there is a clearer route for development.
