Blackpool Deal Close For All-Action Championship Midfielder With Medical Set

Blackpool

Blackpool are set to secure their third signing of the summer transfer window, having already secured the arrivals of Fraser Horsfall and Michael Ihiekwe from Stockport County and Sheffield Wednesday, respectively.

Steve Bruce’s side finished in ninth place in League One last season, one spot lower than their efforts in the 2023/24 campaign.

The Seasiders struggled defensively and appear to have targeted strengthening this area early in the transfer window.

Defensive Struggles at Blackpool Dent Play-Off Chances

At times, Blackpool were difficult to beat in League One last season, evidenced by their run of 11 matches unbeaten from the end of 2024 into February 2025. However, eight of those matches were drawn, and most of their issues were in defence for most of the campaign.

Only two sides in the top 15 conceded more than their tally of 60 goals, and the team ranked outside the top ten for expected goals against.

The leaky nature of their defence may be somewhat addressed with the additions of Horsfall and Ihiekwe, but much of their problems can be attributed to some of the defensive work-rate in front of the back four.

Blackpool ranked 15th for successful tackles per game and in the bottom two for fouls, highlighting that they were too open and easy to play against for the opposition throughout the season. The news of their newest potential signing will go a long way to alleviating this issue.

Medical Set For Millwall Man to Join Seasiders

The definition of an all-round midfielder is arguably 30-year-old George Honeyman. The former Sunerland player played 40 times for Millwall in the Championship in 2024/25, scoring twice and providing five assists.

However, his tendency to play and drift out wide seen him rank third for successful crosses at the club. There is little doubt around his work rate, as he averaged 1.9 tackles per game, or his creativity, averaging 1.1 key passes per game in the second tier. These attributes highlight his effectiveness in multiple areas of the pitch.

Richard Cawley is reporting on X that the now out-of-contract midfielder is expected to have a medical today at Blackpool ahead of completing a move to the Seasiders.

Honeyman has had an illustrious career in the Championship; however, he also played a starring role for Hull City in their League One title success in 2021, providing 18 goal contributions.

There can be little doubt that this would be an excellent signing for Bruce and Blackpool. If they can continue with this level of additions in the summer, they should close the 11-point gap to the play-off positions come April next year.
