Blackpool To Cast Eyes Over Former Championship Midfielder

Blackpool are set to welcome a former Championship midfielder to their side with a view to landing the player on a permanent contract.

The League One side narrowly missed out on the play-off places on the final day of the 2023/24 campaign and are likely to be aiming to go a step further this season and return to the Championship once again.

Despite making a series of signings during the off-season thus far, it appears as though Neil Critchley’s side aren’t finished yet in terms of preparing their squad for the new campaign.

Onomah to Blackpool?

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Blackpool are casting their eyes over midfielder Josh Onomah, who has been a free agent since his June 2023 exit from Championship side Preston North End.

The playmaker hasn’t featured on trial for any side since a failed period with Stoke City last summer but is now set to compete for a first-team contract at the League One side.

His career to date:

Onomah was a product of the Tottenham Hotspur Academy and rose through the youth ranks and into the first-team picture as well as having successful loan stints with both Aston Villa and Preston North End.

In August 2019, Onomah made a switch to Fulham after he was released by Spurs and spent four years with the football club before moving to Preston North End for six months in January 2023.

He has been a free agent since his departure from Deepdale and failed to earn a contract throughout the entirety of the 2023/24 campaign.

Could Onomah replace Dembele?

Speaking of the 2023/24 season, Blackpool fans had the privilege of watching former Celtic youngster Karamoko Dembele who scored eight goals and provided 13 assists whilst on loan from French side Stade Brestois.

However, Dembele has since returned to France and has left a hole in the Blackpool attack which could be filled by Onomah.

Though Onomah hasn’t featured in over a year, he has both Premier League and Championship experience and has represented England from U16s to U21s level, adding a unique level of background knowledge to the League One side.

Unsurprisingly, Dembele will be a difficult man for Blackpool to replace but Onomah can operate in multiple positions and will likely be hopeful of securing a contract and saving his career after a frustrating 12 months.
