Blackpool’s Potential Manager Target Speaks Out on Links

League One Blackpool opted to part company with manager Neil Critchley after just two league games. Now, one of their potential targets has answered questions on the role

Managers from up and down the leagues have been linked to the vacancy including Leyton Orient’s Richie Wellens, caretaker boss Richard Keogh, Barrow’s former manager Pete Wild, Crawley Town’s Scott Lindsey and Preston North End’s former boss Ryan Lowe amongst others.

One name mentioned is former player and current Fleetwood Town boss Charlie Adam. The 38-year-old enjoyed a successful spell with the Seasiders between 2009 and 2011 helping his side get promoted to the Premier League through the play offs. He scored 12 times in 35 appearances in the top flight and also contributed eight assists which prompted giants Liverpool to sign him.

The legend opted to retire in 2022 after leaving Dundee, his coaching journey started at Burnley where he became Assistant Manager then loans manager before taking over at then League One club Fleetwood Town. He took over midway through the season with the club already struggling and was unable to save the club from relegation despite winning three of the final four games.

Now with a pre-season and a summer transfer window behind him Fleetwood Town remain unbeaten in their opening three fixtures, beating Grimsby Town, drawing with Notts County and impressively knocking out Championship side West Brom from the EFL Cup in the first round.

What has Charlie Adam said about Blackpool?

Speaking to BBC Radio Lancashire Adam addressed the potential links:

“I’m in a great job,

“I’m in a position where I’m trying to build something. We’ve worked so hard over the summer to connect everything within the club.

“The group the players. The recruitment has been tough but we feel like we’ve done some good business. Apart from that, that’s it. I’m manager of Fleetwood Town, I’m proud to be here, I’ve been given an opportunity at this football club, and as far as I’m concerned I look forward to the game on Saturday now.”

Will Charlie Adam become Blackpool boss?

It is unlikely at the moment, Charlie Adam may well become a future boss of Blackpool but he is still early in his managerial journey. He was unable to turn around things in League One for Fleetwood and would have little time to make an impact on the Seasiders’ squad even if he signed today.

There are several out of work managers such as Pete Wild that will look far more desirable to the Blackpool hierarchy at this time and it will allow the former Premier League goal scorer to hone his skills in League Two.
