Bolton Wanderers are close to securing a deal to sign Liverpool’s Calvin Ramsay on loan for the remainder of the season, according to journalist Alan Nixon.
The 20-year-old has recently returned to Liverpool following the conclusion of his loan spell at Championship side Preston North End but is set to follow in the footsteps of former loanee Conor Bradley.
Who is Calvin Ramsay?
The young defender began his career with SPFL side Aberdeen, rising through the club’s youth ranks and into the first-team fold, which attracted the interest of several top-flight sides.
This saw him snapped up by Liverpool in a deal worth £4 million and spent a season at Anfield before being loaned out to Preston North End in the Championship. However, his spell at Deepdale was rocked by injuries and he was limited to just two senior appearances for the football club before being recalled earlier this month.
Ramsay has also been capped once by the Scottish national team, back in November 2022 and made his debut during a 2-1 loss against Turkey.
The deal
According to Alan Nixon, Bolton Wanderers have acted quickly to snap up the 20-year-old even despite the club having two first-team right-backs at their disposal.
He will join the League One side on loan for the remainder of the 2023/24 season as Ian Evatt’s men continue to push towards a return to the second tier.
The next Conor Bradley?
Bolton’s last Liverpool loanee was Conor Bradley who has gone from strength to strength since leaving the League One side at the end of the previous season.
In total, Bradley made 53 appearances and contributed to 13 goals during his time with the club. Since returning, Bradley has made eight first-team appearances for Liverpool and started Sunday’s FA Cup victory against Norwich City despite Trent Alexander-Arnold being back in the squad.
Writer’s View
Ramsay is a talented defender but struggled massively with injuries which disrupted his spell in the Championship during the first half of the season.
Bolton Wanderers have a good track record with developing young players and Ramsay is likely to follow a similar pattern as the club competes for promotion back to the second tier.
