Bolton Wanderers will spend the rest of the season without a key striker after manager Ian Evatt confirmed his departure.
Following a 1-0 victory over Lincoln City in the EFL Trophy, the Wanderers boss confirmed the club had accepted a bid for Dion Charles.
There have been numerous rumours about the future of the striker in recent weeks.
His omission from the squad further added to those conversations.
Despite Wrexham and Derby County joining the race to sign the striker, the 29-year-old looks set to move to Huddersfield Town.
What did Ian Evatt say about Dion Charles?
Speaking after Bolton progressed into the EFL Trophy quarter-finals, Manager Ian Evatt confirmed the departure to BBC Radio Manchester.
“We’ve had an offer for Dion that we’ve deemed acceptable so that’s as much as I can tell you at the moment,” he said.
When pressed whether that bid was from Huddersfield Town, Ian Evatt confirmed that indeed it was.
He continued and said “We’ve all had input, there’s a lot of decision makers and Dion Charles is one of them.”
“We’ve come together and decided that it was an acceptable offer for us and that’s all I need to say about that.”
Whilst no fee has been confirmed, it looks set to be a hefty price tag on the Northern Irish International.
“The one thing that we’ve always tried to do here, myself and the board, is try and do right by the club financially,” said Evatt.
Charles joined Bolton Wanderers in 2022. He’s since gone on to score 57 goals for the club in 149 appearances.
A big loss for Bolton Wanderers, but are Huddersfield Town rivals?
The loss of Dion Charles will be a big one for Bolton Wanderers.
Ideally, it would have been to a championship side that Bolton won’t have to face for the foreseeable future.
However, has as been demonstrated with the signing of Joe Taylor, the Terries aren’t afraid to splash the cash.
Wrexham, Birmingham City, and now Huddersfield are in a completely different league financially, compared to the rest of league one.
Bolton Wanderers sit ten points behind Huddersfield in the league. Town are one of the form sides in the division and look set to battle for the automatic promotion spots.
Whilst they still have to face each other once more in the league (25th January), they’re not in the same battle for places.
Yes, the two sides are rivals, but they’re not in the same battle in the league table.
As seen with league one transfers now, if the money is there for a player, teams will cash in to make sure the club can stay afloat.
