Bolton Wanderers Set To Land First January Signing

Bolton Wanderers are expected to complete a deal to sign Shelbourne defender Lewis Temple on a permanent contract ahead of the opening of the January transfer window, according to reports

Steven Schumacher’s side are currently fourth in League One as the division approaches the half way mark, just three points shy of the automatic promotion places. With the January transfer window closely approaching, Bolton appear to have successfully identified their first signing of 2026.

Bolton closing in on first summer addition

The news emerged earlier this afternoon when journalist Daniel McDonnell revealed the Trotters’ interest. It is claimed that Shelbourne’s UEFA Conference League clash against Celje last night would be the 20-year-old’s final appearance for the club.

The centre-back has largely been on the fringes of the League of Ireland outfit’s squad this season, although did make five successive league appearances towards the end of the campaign. He also played the full 90 minutes of the club’s Champions League second round qualifier second leg against Qarabag in July, which they lost 1-0.

In total, he has made 17 appearances across all competitions and has contributed to six clean sheets during that time.

Now, or for the future?

It’s not the first time Bolton have dipped into the Irish market. They signed Eoin Toal from Derry City in 2022, who has since emerged into a key figure having been named club captain in August.

Having moved into serious promotion contention in recent weeks, Schumacher will be keen to add what could be the final touches to his squad next month. The potential new arrival shows that they are wanting to get their business done early.

In terms of where the youngster will fit at his new surroundings remains to be seen. The Greater Manchester-based side have one of the strongest defences in League One and have conceded just 17 goals in 19 games.

George Johnston and Toal are likely to remain the head coach’s preferred centre-back pairing for the foreseeable future, meaning that Temple may have to be patient. However, this is clearly a signing that Bolton feel will benefit them in years to come.
