Boreham Wood Complete Signing Of Experienced Defender

Boreham Wood have completed the signing of former Yeovil Town defender Josh Staunton on a free transfer, as confirmed via a statement on the club’s website.

The 28-year-old has made eight league appearances for Yeovil Town in the National League South this season but was recently allowed to depart the football club in order to pursue a new opportunity.

Staunton has penned a short-term deal with Luke Garrard’s side and has joined in time to make the squad for their National League fixture against Kidderminster Harriers on Saturday afternoon.

The defender began his career with Gillingham and Charlton Athletic before dropping into the Non-League scene. He’s since made over 250 appearances for the likes of Dagenham & Redbridge, Woking and FC Halifax Town before settling at Yeovil Town in 2020.

Before leaving earlier this month, Staunton made roughly 100 appearances for Yeovil Town scoring three times for the football club and took on a player-coach role before his departure from the National League South side.

Boreham Wood are currently sitting in 17th place in the National League, four points above the relegation zone but have experienced a change in form over the last few weeks, taking four points from their last three matches.

Meanwhile, Yeovil Town are cruising towards promotion back to the National League as they sit ten points clear ahead of Hampton & Richmond after winning 16 of their opening 24 league matches so far this season.

Upon confirmation of the signing, manager Luke Garrard stated…

We’ve had our eyes on Josh ever since his departure from Yeovil, he’s a player that knows the level inside out and as a person he has an understanding of what’s expected of him.

We’ve already seen his temperament and the positivity he brings to the group, so we are hoping that he can aid us by bringing his wealth of experience and knowledge of the level.”

Writer’s View

Staunton has plenty of experience in the National League and is a much-needed addition to Boreham Wood at a time when they are fighting to avoid relegation this season.
