Borussia Dortmund have sacked their head coach Nuri Sahin. The German giants made the decision today and announced that they would be parting ways with the 36-year-old Turkish international. The club made their decision known via a post on their social media handles that they were parting ways with Sahin with immediate effects. This was following their 2:1 defeat to Bologna in the Champions League.
Sahin, who only took charge at the beginning of this season, has endured a rocky tenure. A series of recent disappointing results, the latest of which was the 2-1 reverse in Bologna, led to his sacking.
According to the statement released by the club on their official website confirmed that they had parted ways with their club legend. They also stated that the loss last night was the nail in the coffin that made sacking Sahin unavoidable.
The statement of Sports Director Lars Ricken, released on the official BVB website said, “We value Nuri Sahin and his work very much, we hoped for a long-term collaboration and until the end we had hoped that we could achieve a sporting turnaround together. After four defeats in a row, due to only one win in the last nine games and currently tenth in the Bundesliga table, we have unfortunately lost faith in being able to achieve our sporting goals in the current constellation. This decision hurts me personally, but it was unavoidable after the game in Bologna.
Taking Over From Terzic
Nuri Sahin took over after former head coach Edin Terzic stepped down from the job. Terzic had just led Dortmund to a UEFA Champions League final where they fought valiantly but fell to Madrid.
It was a thrilling run in Europe’s premiers club competition. On the domestic front, however, the club endured a turbulent season, only managing to finish 5th on the league table.
Luckily, that was enough to get them to qualify for this season’s Champions League due to the performance of German teams in the Champions League, which gave them the privilege to field 5 teams in the Champions League this season.
Not What was Expected
It had been hoped that Sahin, who was appointed as Terzic’s assistant in December 2023, would lead the team to brighter results. However, after his appointment, things did not unfold as was envisaged.
Dortmund Having a Terrible Season
BVB are currently languishing in 10th place in the Bundesliga, having had a series of poor results. In the Champions League against Bologna last night, Dortmund threw away a 1-0 lead to concede twice in two second-half minutes and lose the match. This has made it four straight losses in all competitions.
Dortmund currently sit 13th and would likely further slide down the table by the time all fixtures are completed today. This loss has dented their prior impressive record in the Champions League, as prior to this, they only lost to Barcelona and Real Madrid, while winning their other four matches.
Because of the latest demoralizing loss, club executives have decided to cut their former head manager loose before things get worse. As it stands, Mike Tullberg will take over for next week’s match against Werder Bremen.
Sahin’s Reaction to Departure and Legacy
Nuri Sahin was saddened by having to depart; he said ” Unfortunately, we have not managed to live up to Borussia Dortmund’s sporting ambitions this season. I wish this special club all the best”.
Sahin, despite his abysmal tenure as coach is a club legend, spending ten years in total over two spells at the Signal Iduma Park as a player. He made 274 appearances for BVB, scoring 26 goals and registering 49 assists in front of the yellow wall.
Former Manchester United Boss Erik ten Hag to Take Over?
It is being widely speculated that Erik ten Hag could be set to take the hot seat at Dortmund following his sacking by Manchester United earlier in the season. The former Ajax man has been performing a role as a “shadow coach” offering his expertise at the club for a few weeks and has a good relationship with the club.
It could mean an imminent return to management for ten Hag, as reports continue to link Marcus Rashford with a move to Germany.
