Grimsby Town are set to beat a host of League One and League Two sides to the signing of Bradford City star Andy Cook as the striker edges closer to the exit door.
The 35-year-old forward has been a key player for the Bantams since joining the club in 2021. He has recorded 88 goals and 24 assists in 205 appearances which included a League Two Golden Boot in the 2022/23 season.
However, with the club now in League One and Cook now in the twilight of his career, his influence has significantly waned. After recovering from a significant ACL injury he has played a bit-part role this season and has not featured in a matchday squad since November.
With his contract set to expire in the summer, an exit looks to be inevitable.
Grimsby Town Set to Win Transfer Race for Bradford City Legend
According to Simon Parker, a host of League One and Two clubs have enquired about taking the Bantams’ all-time leading goal scorer on loan for the rest of the season. However David Artell’s Grimsby Town are set to welcome back their former player almost 12 years after he left the club.
Andy Cook joined the Mariners in 2012 on a deal from Barrow, where he went on to score 14 goals and contribute six assists in 77 games in the Conference Premier, twice reaching the play-offs. He returned to Barrow in 2014.
He has also been on the books of Carlisle United, Walsall and Tranmere Rovers amongst others.
Cook’s final goal for Bradford City came against Newcastle United in the club’s 4-1 defeat in the EFL Cup in September.
Experience Key for David Artell’s Grimsby Town
Andy Cook brings a wealth of experience to Grimsby Town, with over 640 senior appearances and 248 goals in a career that dates back to 2009/10. Not only that he knows the club and the level well.
The Mariners, at times have suffered from some naivety on the pitch, which has arguably impacted their promotion push. Whilst it is unlikely Cook will be able to play every game, he will be a vital voice off the pitch.
He also knows several off the players including Clarke Oduor, Jamie Walker and Reece Staunton which should allow him to settle in quickly.
The 35-year-old is a proven goal scorer at League Two level, having scored 87 goals in 212 fourth tier appearances. With Grimsby sitting six points off the play-offs Cook’s contribution could be vital as they look to hunt down the sides above them.
