Bradford City are reportedly in talks to sign former League One winner Matty Pearson, who has recently been released by West-Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town at the end of the 2024-25 season, reported by Alan Nixon.
The central defender has been quite an established figure at Huddersfield over the years, making 135 appearances for the club, proving a strong figure in the defence that guided Town to the Championship play-off final in 2022.
Matty Pearson’s Achievements:
- Accrington Stanley Player of the Year – 2016/17
- League One Winner – 2018/19 – Luton Town
- Huddersfield Town Player of the Year – 2022/23
Why are Bradford City moving for Pearson?
Bradford City boasted an excellent defensive record in League Two last season, conceding only 45 goals across their 46 league fixtures last year, the second least of any side in the division.
This defensive record was a crucial aspect in seeing Graham Alexander’s side lift promotion to League One on the final day; however, a new look defence may be on the cards as the Bantams prepare to step up to the third tier.
With Romoney Crichlow’s release, alongside standout players Jack Shepherd and Tayo Adaramola’s returns to Barnsley and Crystal Palace respectively, the Yorkshire club look set to be in the market for new defensive players this summer.
If the Valley Parade outfit were to sign the central defender, they would be getting an established, cultured defender with a wealth of experience at the level.
In spells with Huddersfield and Luton Town, the 31-year-old has proven as a regular performer at the top end of League One or the lower half of the Championship, even contributing five goals for the Terriers last campaign.
While already boasting some experienced heads in the likes of Richie Smallwood and Antoni Sarcevic, players established at the level is pivotal for newly promoted clubs, which Pearson certainly is.
Bradford City prepare for life back in League One
Following a dramatic promotion from League Two on the final day, Alexander’s men will be looking to acclimatize to the third tier and avoid any potential relegation to League Two.
With experienced heads leading Bradford’s promotion charge, City appear to be taking a similar approach this window, having signed treble promotion winner Max Power already.
The defender would be a signing befitting of Bradford’s recent transfer windows, with Alexander benefitting greatly from the presence of experienced figureheads in the dressing room, which could be integral to maintaining the club’s League One status next season.
