Bristol Rovers Defender Set For Exit

Bristol Rovers are expected to say goodbye to one of their defenders, with a permanent exit reportedly imminent from the League One side.

The football club have been active in the summer transfer window so far, landing several new players to strengthen their bid of pushing for a top six finish in League One next season.

However, with a series of incomings already made, it may come as little surprise to their supporters that an exit or two could be on the cards for the club.

Connolly to League Two?

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Bristol Rovers defender James Connolly has agreed a permanent switch to beaten League Two play-off finalists Crewe Alexandra.

Connolly is due to sign a two-year contract with the League Two side, becoming their latest summer acquisition ahead of their season opener against Barrow next weekend.

How did he fare last season?

The 22-year-old spent the first-half of the previous campaign with fellow League Two side Morecambe, before returning to the club in January.

He contributed to three goals in 17 appearances in all competitions for Morecambe before being recalled by the League One side.

Upon his return, he made an additional 12 appearances for the football club, starting three times in total and helping to keep one clean sheet.

Will this signing affect Bristol Rovers?

Losing a defensive option will reduce the squad depth in the centre-back area, as well as losing a player that has featured as a defensive midfielder previously too.

However, Bristol Rovers have signed defensive players including youngster Dan Ellison from Chippenham Town, meaning the departure will be more of a boost to Crewe Alexandra rather than a negative for the League One outfit.

Bristol Rovers begin their 2024/25 League One campaign next weekend as they host Northampton Town but will likely be doing so without Connolly in the squad.
