Bristol Rovers have confirmed the signing of Sil Swinkels on loan from Aston Villa until the end of the season.
Swinkels joins Rovers looking for consistent game time in his first loan spell in the EFL and the Gas require defensive cover to help clear them of any potential relegation trouble.
Rovers confirmed the capture of Swinkels on deadline day on the club’s official website. He becomes Rovers’ third January signing after the arrivals of Romaine Sawyers and Matt Butcher.
Is Sil Swinkels’ Inexperience an Issue?
Swinkels’ move to Rovers will be his first loan move away from Aston Villa since arriving at the club from Vitesse back in 2020.
The Dutchman’s lack of football league experience could cause concern for some fans of the Gas who may have wanted a more weathered defender as the club look to climb away from a relegation dogfight.
However, Swinkels has featured heavily in Villa’s Premier League 2 side as well as having started the EFL Cup clash with Wycombe Wanderers this season and will likely bring some youth and dynamism to a squad with an average age nearing 27.
Bristol Rovers Looking for Defensive Stability
Rovers boss Inigo Calderon will be looking for Swinkels to help sure up a back line that has shipped 44 goals this season.
Swinkels will no doubt be looking to link up with fellow Aston Villa loanee Lino Sousa who joined Rovers on loan in the summer and has found regular minutes of late featuring in 14 League One matches so far this season.
The Gas find themselves sat in 18th place in League One currently six points off the drop zone and are slowly finding some form having picked up nine points from their last five games, as the tide is starting to turn for the better since the arrival of Inigo Calderon.
