Burton Albion have announced the signing of former Salford City midfielder Elliot Watt upon the expiry of his contract via a post on the club website.
The 24-year-old becomes Burton Albion’s first addition to the playing squad for new manager Mark Robinson, as they look to rebuild the squad after narrowly avoiding relegation last season.
Elliot Watt had this to say to the club’s website upon signing for Burton…
“I’m buzzing to be here. From the first call that was put to me about the plans and what the new owners want to do here, it brings me nothing but excitement.
“I’ve had a really good phone call with the new Head Coach and with the Sporting Director. Every person that I’ve spoken to about the club, the conversations we’ve had have been positive.
“There’s a lot of change going on at the club this summer and we need to keep our feet on the ground, but who knows where we can end up if we all pull together in the right direction, so it’s a really exciting time.”
Who is Elliott Watt?
Elliot was a product of the Wolves Academy, where he earned his first professional contract in 2017. His first experience of senior football was in the second half of the 2019/20 League Two season with Carlisle United where he played 12 games, scoring once and assisting three times.
Upon returning, he made the move to Bradford City on a two-year deal, where he played 87 of the 92 League Two games, scoring five goals during his time there.
He then moved to Salford City, again on a two-year deal and the 2022/23 season was arguably the best of his career. He provided 16 assists in the league, earning himself a place in the League Two Team of the Season, and helping Salford finish in the play-off places. During the 2023/24 season, he made 36 appearances for Salford and provided six assists in what was a difficult season for them finishing in 20th place.
Watt a signing for Burton?
This is about as close as a replacement to the outgoing Jack Powell that Burton could have got, compared to other central midfielders in League Two last season. Elliot was in the 7% for chance creation in League Two whilst also being in the top 10% for most successful passes per 90.
This deal represents a real positive start to the summer transfer window and the start of a new era for Burton. Watt also joins on a free transfer, presenting a low-risk arrival with the potential of extremely high rewards if he can manage to excel in his new home.
