Burton Albion have joined the race to sign Salford City forward Callum Hendry on a permanent contract this summer.

The 26-year-old recently had his one-year option triggered by the League Two side and is reportedly open to a potential exit from the football club before the 2024/25 campaign gets underway.

Salford have already lost midfielder Elliot Watt to the Brewers and a second raid of the League Two side could be on the cards.

Burton Albion and SPFL side Motherwell are interested in signing the Scottish forward, whilst League Two rivals MK Dons are also in the race to land him.

How did Hendry fare last season?

After missing roughly four months of the season with a knee injury, Hendry still managed to make 30 appearances in all competitions for Salford last season.

During that time, Hendry scored nine goals and provided an additional assist, with all ten of those contributions arriving in League Two alone.

The forward scored a hat-trick against Tranmere Rovers last season as well as a brace during a 5-3 victory against Barrow.

What factors could affect the players choice?

According to journalist Alan Nixon, Salford City are holding out for a fee for the 26-year-old, following their decision to trigger his one-year option.

The requirement of a fee could put any of the three sides off a potential move, forcing them to search for a cheaper alternative.

Nixon has confirmed that Hendry would be keen on a move to MK Dons if the two clubs could agree on a fee, but he didn’t mention whether the same applies to both Burton and Motherwell.

What could Hendry offer to Burton?

The opportunity to link up with former teammate Elliot Watt could prove to be a proposition that may be too difficult to turn down.

Hendry has offered almost a goal every three matches throughout his career in League Two but has never played at a higher level in England than that, although he has played in the Scottish Premiership.

The forward is a consistent goal scorer in English football but can also operate in the attacking midfield role or as a left-winger, which would improve the depth and versatility within the Brewers’ side.
