Burton Albion are closing in on a deal to sign Accrington Stanley midfielder Tommy Leigh after the two clubs agreed a fee, as reported by journalist Alan Nixon.
The 24-year-old has played a starring role for Accrington Stanley in League Two but is not the subject of an ambitious transfer swoop by the Brewers as they aim to avoid another season battling relegation in the third tier.
How did Leigh fair last season?
Despite interest from elsewhere, Leigh remained with Accrington Stanley, making 42 appearances in all competitions during the 2023/24 campaign.
Within that time, Leigh scored eight goals and provided an additional four assists with all 12 of them arriving in League Two alone.
In terms of Leigh’s in-depth statistics, he managed 2.15 shots, 26.8 passes and 5.59 duel wins per 90 minutes for Accrington this season, proving to be useful at both ends of the pitch.
What will this move mean for Burton Albion?
The Brewers have found themselves in constant relegation battles in League One and only survived the drop on the final day of the 2023/24 campaign despite a heavy defeat.
Leigh meanwhile has been linked with several higher-positioned League One sides, making this transfer a coup from a Burton Albion perspective.
The move suggests that the Brewers have a strong passion in wanting to avoid another relegation battle next season in League One.
Is this a good move for Leigh’s development?
A move to the Brewers will allow the 24-year-old to return to League One and allow him to continue to thrive in a side of similar quality despite the league difference.
Moving to Portsmouth would have limited the amount of game time that Leigh is likely to get, but a move to Burton will have the opposite effect which will continue to allow him to thrive with regular first-team football.
