Shrewsbury Town have confirmed the signing of experienced midfielder Jack Price on a free transfer, but can he help to keep the football club in League One?

Price has spent the last couple of months training with the League One side after leaving MLS side Colorado Rapids at the end of the 2023 season, but with Shrewsbury Town staring relegation in the face, he will have his work cut out trying to help his side avoid the drop.

Where are Shrewsbury in the table?

Following their heavy defeat against Exeter City on Tuesday evening, Shrewsbury Town sits 17th in League One, seven points above the relegation zone although they have played as many as two matches more than some of the sides directly below them and they aren’t out of the woods just yet.

The Shrews have eight matches left to play but have lost three of their last four games, with the club having Reading and a resurgent Fleetwood Town amongst the sides directly below them.

What will Price bring to the club?

The 31-year-old is best known in England for making over 100 appearances for Wolverhampton Wanderers, before moving to MLS side Colorado Rapids in 2018 and spending five years with the football club.

He has a fierce amount of experience and leadership which should prove vital over the next eight matches. With Jordan Shipley being shown a red card and the club having a younger side, signing a player with the know-how of Price should be influential for the League One side.

Who have the Shrews got left?

Currently, Shrewsbury Town have collected 41 points with eight games to go, meaning they still need roughly nine points to confirm their safety for another season but that is much easier said than achieved.

The club have a must-win home match against bottom side Carlisle United this weekend, before facing Oxford United and Bristol Rovers during the Easter weekend. This is followed up with a trip to the league leaders Portsmouth, whilst ending the season with games against Wycombe Wanderers (H), Bolton Wanderers (A), Charlton Athletic (A) and Leyton Orient (H).

With the club having a very tricky schedule, this weekend’s match has to end in a victory for Shrewsbury Town, otherwise, they face an extremely difficult few weeks ahead of them, with sides below them expected to earn points which will see them catch up to the Shrews.

I remain confident that Shrewsbury Town can avoid relegation this season, but they will have to do it the hard way and hopefully, Price has what it takes to inspire his teammates to clinch safety and move past this frustrating campaign.
