Carlisle United boss Paul Simpson has confirmed that a deal has been struck with a Premier League loan player to join this window in an update on the club’s transfer business.
The League Two side suffered relegation from the third tier last season in an ultimately disappointing campaign. They finished bottom of the table on 30 points, 11 points off 23rd and 16 points away from Burton Albion, who occupied the final safe spot. In 46 games they only recorded seven wins but were also only beaten nine times (the joint second lowest in the league).
What ultimately became their undoing was their inability to turn draws into victories, recording a league high of 30.
They have been somewhat busy in the transfer window with the most notable addition being Charlie Wyke, despite links to Bradford City. Archie Davies, Cameron Harper, Ethan Robson, Terell Thomas, Aaron Hayden and Jude Smith have all linked up with the squad ahead of the new season.
Carlisle have also struck a deal for an unnamed Premier League loan player to join later in the pre-season schedule, according to reports. The player in question is confirmed to link up with the squad later this month at the end of his club’s pre-season tour.
What’s Been Said?
Speaking to the News and Star, Paul Simpson discussed his plans for the remaining transfer window:
“I’d like to bring two more in, ideally.
“I want to try and go with a squad of 25, whether that’s permanent or whether it’s other loans.
“We’re just going to have to wait and see. It’s actually finding the ones who are going to be different for us.
“But we’re keeping working. I’ve been in discussions every day with Greg [Abbott, head of recruitment] during our week at St Andrews] and we’ll just keep working until we get the right people in.”
A big season for Carlisle United
After a disastrous 23/24 campaign that saw the new ownership group seemingly preparing for League Two from the January transfer they will be hoping that this season they can use their new resources to compete once again for promotion.
Several of the “big hitters” from the fourth tier have departed including Wrexham, Stockport and Mansfield which could point towards Carlisle having a good chance to complete their goals. The additions of Wyke from under the noses of the Bantams whilst also bolstering the squad in key areas will be a boost to the fans looking for something to celebrate.
