Carlisle United have had a busy start to the January transfer window, but not all of it has been successful thus far, with the club having had a bid rejected for one of their latest targets.

The League Two strugglers have already secured several new additions to their squad including Stephen Wearne, Callum Whelan and Will Patching, but it appears as though business isn’t over just yet.

According to reports from Football League World and journalist Pete O’Rourke, Carlisle United have been one of two League Two sides that have had a bid rejected for Barnet winger Idris Kanu.

Carlisle have faced competition from fellow League Two side Bromley but both teams have had bids turned down by the National League side.

How has he fared this season?

Kanu has been a regular for Barnet during the 2024/25 campaign thus far, but he’s not been utilised in his favoured winger position, as he’s often featured as a wing-back in Dean Brennan’s ongoing system.

The 25-year-old has made 22 appearances in the National League for the Bees this season, scoring once and providing an additional assist.

He also averages 3.5 successful dribbles per 90 minutes as well as eight duel wins, 3.5 ball recoveries and a total pass success rate of 81% for the Bees.

Is this a good move for Carlisle?

Despite not managing him, Williamson will be familiar with Kanu having managed against him during his spell with Gateshead, increasing the likelihood of him already knowing how to utilise the player if a deal was agreed.

Kanu is naturally a winger who likes to get forward, create chances and score goals, but he’s had his role altered at times this season due to tactics and injuries.

Carlisle are currently averaging less than a goal per game in League Two this season, have lost three matches on the spin and find themselves seven points off safety.

The addition of another attacker would help to provide a boost in attack for Carlisle at a time where they desperately need to improve otherwise they will be relegated.
