Carlisle United Enter Talks With Former Defender

Carlisle United are plotting a somewhat ambitious move to re-sign former defender Morgan Feeney following his departure from now-League Two side Shrewsbury Town.

The Blues are back in the National League next season, but have already pulled off one statement signing of their own in the form of talisman Regan Linney from Altrincham and are continuing on with their recruitment plans.

Feeney will become a free agent shortly following the expiry of his contract at Shrewsbury, as well as his exit already being confirmed by Michael Appleton’s side in their retained list.

Carlisle plot dream Feeney return

As reported by journalist Alan Nixon, Carlisle United are in talks with defender Morgan Feeney ahead of a potential return to the National League side.

The defender had a three-year stint with Carlisle prior to his move to Shrewsbury but now looks set to potentially return ahead of the 2025/26 National League campaign.

No fee is involved in the transfer and it remains to be seen whether Feeney will move to Carlisle or whether an EFL side could come in and secure his signature instead to try and stop him from dropping out of the football league altogether.

How did he fare last season?

Feeney was a regular feature for Shrewsbury Town last season and became popular amongst the supporters judging by their reaction to his departure on social media.

Despite the club’s relegation down to League Two, Feeney made a total of 39 appearances across all competitions and contributed to two goals as well as playing 41 times in his debut campaign prior.

During his two years at the Shrews, he has proven to be able to stay away from injuries, deliver strong performances and even chip in with goal contributions at the other end of the pitch.

Can Feeney’s arrival stabilise a disappointing defence?

Last season, Carlisle United massively underperformed in League Two, finishing 23rd in the table whilst conceding 71 goals in the process.

The likes of Sam Levelle have already left the club after their respective deals came to an end and Mark Hughes’ side are now in the process of trying to rebuild their side to go again in the National League next season.

Feeney was a very popular player at Carlisle during his previous stint, brings plenty of experience to the defensive line and significantly improves the quality at the club in that area.

Therefore, on paper he should be more than capable of reviving a struggling defence and encouraging them to put their woes behind them and push towards getting Carlisle back into the EFL once again.
