League Two side Carlisle United have today announced the signing of prolific striker Charlie Wyke.

Wyke was a part of the youth set up with Middlesbrough and enjoyed had loan spells with Kettering, Hartlepool and Wimbledon. He was on loan at the beginning of the 2014/15 season on loan at Hartlepool where he scored four goals in his 14 appearances before he made his move to Brunton Park.

Charlie Wyke scored 39 goals in 89 games with the Blues before making the move to Bradford. From there, he moved back to the north-east when he joined Sunderland. He had a successful time at the Stadium of Light, and scored 31 goals in 54 games for Sunderland including the winning goal in a play-off final victory over Lincoln City to send the Black Cats back to the Championship.

He then had spells with Wigan Athletic and Rotherham United and joins the Blues on the back of 9 goals in 34 appearances for both clubs last season.

Blues’ manager Paul Simpson said: “As you can imagine, I’m absolutely delighted to get Charlie back into the club.

“It’s something that has been talked about for a while. We tried to get him to come to us in January but he wanted to stay at the highest level he could and ended up going to the Championship.

“We’ve been talking on and off during summer, but like all players, Charlie wanted to wait and see what other offers he got. It was clear there were other clubs at a higher level who were keen but he is excited to come back and help take us forward again. We’re delighted to have him in with us.

“Everyone can see from his record that he is a proven goal scorer and we’re all really looking forward to working with him.”

It was also announced that Charlie Wyke will wear the number 10 jersey for the Blues next season.

Where will Wyke fit in for The Cumbrians?

Paul Simpson will now have a number of strikers to choose from next season. The main four strikers at the club will be Georgie Kelly, Luke Armstrong, Dan Butterworth and now Charlie Wyke so the manager will have a dilemma on his hands but it’s a selection dilemma that most managers would enjoy.

In my opinion I think with Wyke being given the number 10 jersey it tells me he’s going to be a first choice striker for Paul Simpson’s side and with Wyke’s prolific goal scoring record behind him and his reputation from his first spell at the club it would be tough to argue against that. Wyke will also add some much needed experience to Carlisle’s front line as well.
