Bolton Wanderers are closing in on a deal to sign forward Marcus Forss from Championship side Middlesbrough on a season-long loan deal.
The 26-year-old has slipped down the pecking order at the Riverside Stadium and appears set to head out of the door this summer to try and resurrect his career after a tough season previously.
Following the clubs unbeaten start to their Championship season, Forss looks further away from a starting role than ever before and the idea of that changing seems unlikely in the short term.
Forss set for Bolton Wanderers switch
As reported by journalist Dominic Shaw, Bolton Wanderers have reached an agreement with Middlesbrough for the transfer of forward Marcuss Forss before Monday’s deadline.
Forss is set to link up with Bolton on a season-long loan deal, where he is likely to want to impress as he faces an uncertain summer next year.
That’s because the forward only has 12 months remaining on his contract with the Championship side and is set to become a free agent unless he can prove himself whilst away on loan.
How did he fare last season?
After arriving on a permanent contract from Brentford, Forss initially stood out with 15 goal contributions in his debut campaign, before hitting nine in 23 games the season after.
Last season, a combination of factors including new signings and injuries saw Forss once again miss almost half of the season. During that time he only managed one goal contribution whilst averaging just 28 minutes per appearance.
During the ongoing campaign, Forss has been back in the squad though he’s made just two appearances across all competitions so far but hasn’t featured since their heavy EFL Cup exit against Doncaster Rovers.
How beneficial is this move for all parties?
In short, this transfer could have many benefits for all three parties involved in the transfer if it goes well.
Middlesbrough would be left with a choice on whether to cut ties and save wages, or offer him new terms if he does well – where he could either be sold on or used as an option moving forward again.
Forss would get the opportunity to get himself back amongst the goals on a consistent basis and get his love for the game back after a tough run of injuries.
Meanwhile, Bolton Wanderers will be getting a very talented striker who could grab enough goals to throw them back into a top six battle once again – with the possibility of a permanent move not being out of the question.
There are many risks too with his lack of consistency and injuries having the potential to play apart in his campaign, but its highly likely Forss will want consistent minutes and therefore is ready to risk these factors again.
