Championship Side Handed Major Boost As Charlton Athletic Move Falls Through

Charlton Athletic have suffered a significant transfer blow in their pursuit of a former Premier League goalkeeper, as a result of finances.

Nathan Jones’ side have had a strong transfer window with the likes of Matt Godden and Luke Berry joining the League One side, despite losing star man Alfie May to Birmingham City earlier in the transfer window.

However, despite the positivity within the window so far, Charlton have unfortunately missed out on what would have been a major coup for a League One side.

Begovic move collapses

As reported by journalist Richard Cawley, Charlton Athletic’s proposed move for former Premier League goalkeeper Asmir Begovic has collapsed and now won’t be taking place.

The former international goalkeeper had agreed a transfer to the League One side, which had a further boost with confirmation of Harry Isted’s permanent switch to fellow third-tier side Burton Albion.

However, financial demands within the deal have put an end to Charlton’s pursuit of the experienced goalkeeper.

How did he fare last season?

The 37-year-old spent last season with Championship side Queens Park Rangers, where he made 46 appearances across all competitions following his switch from Everton.

Begovic kept 13 clean sheets across his matches during the previous season as well as captaining the Championship side as they climbed away from relegation after an initial threat due to a disappointing start to the campaign.

He’s also made 63 international appearances for Bosnia and news of his transfer collapse will be a significant blow for Charlton.

How big of a blow is this for Charlton?

Begovic is an extremely experienced goalkeeper and proven leader, which suggests why his wages were on the higher side but also why this move is such a big blow for the club.

With Harry Isted moving on, it leads Charlton to have to search for alternative options with the opening of the 2024/25 campaign fast approaching.

However, this does give Championship side Blackburn Rovers a major boost in their pursuit of the 37-year-old.
