Birmingham City are understood to be negotiating with Championship Blackburn Rovers for the potential sale of Siriki Dembele but could strike a swap deal for the player instead, according to reports.Â
Blackburn Rovers are keen on adding Dembele to their squad this summer but are also considering alternatives. Ryo Germain, who currently plays for Jubilo is available and able to sign for the club despite not holding a work permit due to the regulation changes that allowed a certain number of players to enter who do not qualify.
However, the Blues have asked the club about a potential swap deal for Dembele rather than a straight sale, according to Alan Nixon. The player they may be interested in isn’t revealed, but Birmingham City have been keen to add top quality Championship talent to their roster this transfer window.
One stumbling block for a potential sale could come in the form of Siriki’s brother Karamoko, who is wanted by the League One side. The idea of playing with his brother could deter potential rivals for his signature Derby County, meaning selling Siriki could hand the advantage to the Rams.
Sale not worth it for Birmingham City?
With the financial resources behind the scenes at Birmingham City, a sale does not appear to make sense. They are not in a position where they have to sell to buy and already reportedly have a huge chunk of their sizable transfer kitty yet to spend. Therefore, to sell a player who they do not want to leave for more cash would arguably not be a wise strategy. However, using the player as leverage to perhaps prize a target away from the interested club could be a masterstroke and allow them to continue with their current transfer strategy.
Who that player is, isn’t known but knowing how ambitious Birmingham City are, it is unlikely to be an average player.
