Sheffield Wednesday, Rotherham and Huddersfield are all monitoring Wigan Athletic winger Jordan Jones, as reported by HITC.

The Northern Ireland international is out of contract with the Latics this summer. While Shaun Maloney and his side are ready to begin negotiations on new terms for the winger, Championship clubs could throw a spanner in the works for the League One outfit as Jones is attracting interest from the second tier.

His stint with the club in League One has proven to be a lifeline this season. Spells with Rangers and Sunderland left many questioning the 29-year-old’s abilities. However, this season, he has been involved in 10 goals, with nine assists and one goal in all competitions. Six of those assists have come in the league, with Wigan ignoring a 12-point deduction they were handed at the beginning of the season to rise up the table and clear of the relegation battle.

The three Championship clubs are all locked in the relegation battle in the second tier. Rotherham and Sheffield Wednesday are currently in the relegation spots, and Huddersfield are in danger of entering those bottom three should they lose to QPR.

A move to Rotherham would see Jones reunite with former manager Leam Richardson. The two linked up during Richardson’s time in charge in 2021. However, Jones failed to make an impression, with two assists and no goals in 17 games. The 29-year-old would eventually be allowed to go out on loan in 2022 to Scottish side Kilmarnock. That loan move allowed him to find his feet once again, and Richardson is one of three managers prepared to give him another chance in the Championship.

Writer’s View

Jones has been one of the reasons for Wigan to overcome the deficit they started their season with, meaning losing him would be a blow for Maloney’s side. Richardson only allowing Jones to go out on loan makes sense when you look at his form now. Perhaps Jones would feel he has to repay that faith that his former manager showed in him as he offers another Championship chance to the Northern Ireland international.
