Barnsley are closing in on a deal to sign winger Reyes Cleary from Championship side West Bromwich Albion on a permanent contract.
The 21-year-old is set to join the League One side, following the impressive nature of his loan spell in the National League last season.
He will become Conor Hourihane’s latest recruit, as Barnsley prepare themselves for yet another season in League One.
Cleary set for Barnsley switch
As reported by Football League World, Barnsley have struck a deal to sign West Bromwich Albion winger Reyes Cleary on a free transfer.
Cleary spent time with both Walsall and Hartlepool United last season, impressing significantly at the latter.
He is set to become a free agent in Tuesday when his contract at the Hawthorns officially comes to an end.
How did he fare last season?
Clearly began last season on loan with League Two side Walsall, but made just seven appearances for the Saddlers, scoring once.
After being recalled in January, Cleary began to feature for West Brom’s U21s in the Premier League 2, scoring twice in his first outing before being quickly snapped up by Hartlepool United.
In the National League, Cleary went from strength to strength, registering ten goal contributions in 20 appearances as the club secured a mid-table finish.
This run included a goal and assist during a 4-1 victory against Boston United as well as crucial goals against the likes of Gateshead and FC Halifax Town.
Is he ready for League One football?
Over recent seasons, Barnsley have become used to signing at least one player from the National League, with examples including Kacper Lopata and Andy Dallas.
Cleary proved last season that he was more than good enough for the National League, but did struggle in the fourth tier, though he wasn’t given enough minutes to truly showcase his ability.
This deal is likely to see Cleary go out on loan anyway this summer, giving him the chance to try and prove himself in the EFL before returning to Barnsley.
