Charlton Athletic Agree Deal for Championship Defender

Charlton Athletic

Charlton Athletic have “agreed a deal” to sign Millwall defender Alex Mitchell on a permanent deal, according to journalist Richard Cawley

The South London Press sports editor posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account that the 22-year-old defender, who spent last season on loan at SkyBet League One Lincoln City, is “edging closer” to a move to the Addicks.

Charlton Athletic Getting Closer:

It was reported by the South London Press that Charlton were “closing in” on a move for the Millwall defender on June 13. That deal is seemingly closer to becoming a reality now, as the Nathan Jones’ managed side are said to have agreed a deal with Championship Millwall.

The permanent transfer would mean the Lion’s academy graduate would leave the club, after working his way through the academy ranks over recent years.

Personal terms are reportedly not an issue in the deal, according to Mr. Cawley’s social media post.

Disappointment for Lincoln City:

Mitchell played 41 games for Lincoln last season during his season-long loan spell. That included 36 in the league, as he impressed in a sturdy Imps defence throughout the campaign.

He went close to securing play-off football with Michael Skubala’s side, though a final day defeat to League One champions Portsmouth proved one loss too many in their late dash for the top six.

The news of the 22-year-old’s deal moving closer to completion comes on the same day that coach Chris Cohen exited Lincoln City for Championship side Stoke City, and goalkeeper Jordan Wright left on an undisclosed fee for fourth tier Grimsby Town.

It Would Be a Great Signing – Opinion:

As I said in my article on the initial reports yesterday, Alex Mitchell has been fantastic in an Imps shirt over the past season. For any promotion-chasing League One side, like Charlton Athletic, to secure his permanent signature ahead of the upcoming campaign would be a well done piece of business.
