Charlton Athletic are closing in on their latest summer capture, as Nathan Jones continues to build a side that he believes is capable enough of pushing the club closer to a Championship return.
Summer signing Matt Godden got himself off the mark at the weekend as Charlton beat Bolton Wanderers 2-0 to send the club into third place.
Nathan Jones’s side have a 100% record in League One so far this season, scoring four goals without conceding any but even despite their strong start, Charlton appears to be closing in on another reinforcement before their trip to Reading this weekend.
Charlton to clinch Campbell signing
As reported by journalist Pete O’Rourke, Charlton Athletic have agreed a loan deal with Championship side Luton Town for midfielder Allan Campbell, for the duration of the 2024/25 campaign.
Campbell has reportedly passed a medical at the League One outfit and is set to sign for Nathan Jones’ side before the window closes on Friday after the midfielder fell out of favour under manager Rob Edwards.
Charlton have beaten several English sides as well as SPFL duo Aberdeen and Hibernian to the signing of the former Scottish international.
How did he fare last season?
The midfielder contributed five goals in 47 appearances for Luton Town as they clinched promotion into the Premier League, completing their fierce rise from the Non-League scene.
However, Campbell failed to register an appearance in the Premier League under Rob Edwards and was instead loaned out to Championship side Millwall.
At the Den, the 26-year-old provided two assists in 12 Championship appearances but suffered an ankle injury, which ultimately ended his time with Neil Harris’ side.
Can Charlton maintain their strong start?
Despite losing Alfie May to League One rivals Birmingham City earlier this summer, Charlton Athletic haven’t been afraid to bring in players to continue their plan of making it back into the Championship.
Matt Godden, Gassan Ahadme and Luke Berry are among those with Championship experience who have made the switch to Nathan Jones’ side this summer.
Adding experience and proving to have the ability to score despite May’s departure certainly bolds well for their end-of-season expectations.
