Charlton Athletic and Bristol Rovers have both reportedly met the asking price for full-back Josh Edwards from Dunfermline, according to The Courier.

The defender is set to hold talks with the Addicks and The Gas over a potential move after both clubs reportedly had bids accepted by the Scottish club.

The 23-year-old has spent five years with Dunfermline but is set to enter the final year of his current deal after the club opted to activate an extension clause adding a further 12 months.

Leyton Orient, Lincoln City, Blackpool, Wycombe Wanderers and Championship side Oxford United had all been previously linked with moved for the player this summer after an impressive campaign. Barnsley had also attempted to sign the player in January but saw their bids rejected. The defender made 36 league appearances, scoring three times and contributing eight assists. His performances earned him a spot in the PFA Scotland Championship Team of the Year.

Is the time right to move on from Dunfermline?

After five years with the club and picking up the League One title, Edwards will leave the club on a high. His value will be at a decent level, despite the lack of time remaining on his contract. For Dunfermline, they have a superb asset that they could see walk out of the door for free in 12 months’ time. If they sell him now they can recoup some funds to reinvest into a potential replacement whilst also allowing the player to further his career in the English game.

At 23, he will be entering his prime years by the end of his next contract, so will be hoping to end that in a good position to continue his progression up the EFL, either with his new club or in a good position to secure a move to a club in the Championship.
