Charlton Athletic Defender Wanted Permanently By League One Promotion Chasers

Plymouth Argyle want to keep Charlton defender Alex Mitchell beyond this season, with head coach Tom Cleverley confirming he is a key part of their summer plans.

The 24-year-old centre-back has become one of Argyle’s most important players during his loan spell, and the club are now exploring whether a longer-term deal can be agreed.

Mitchell has made 38 league appearances this season, scoring three times and establishing himself as a regular starter. Since arriving early in the campaign, he has grown into a central figure in the side, with only Malachi Boateng featuring more often.

His performances have also been recognised internally, winning Plymouth’s Player of the Month award twice during the season, underlining his consistency across the campaign.

Charlton decision set to shape outcome

Any move for Mitchell is likely to depend on Charlton’s position this summer. The defender still has a year remaining on his contract at The Valley, meaning Plymouth would need to negotiate a fee if they are to secure him on a permanent basis.

Cleverley has acknowledged that uncertainty, but confirmed the club have already made their interest clear as they begin to plan for next season.

“Three real key parts of the team and I will be having conversations to hopefully see a little bit more of them.”

“Mitch is going to have a lot of interest. I don’t know what Charlton’s plans are with him. That’s probably one for the off season.

“Yeah, Mitch will have a lot of interest in the summer. I think if he is available then we have put our hat in the ring.”

Mitchell’s form means Plymouth are unlikely to be the only club monitoring his situation, particularly given his experience across multiple loan spells in the EFL and Scotland before joining Charlton.

Consistency has driven his rise

Before arriving at Home Park, Mitchell had already built a solid record through loan moves at clubs including Leyton Orient, St Johnstone and Lincoln City. That experience has translated into consistent performances this season, where he has been a regular presence in defence.

His current spell has been his most productive in front of goal, adding three league goals to his contributions while maintaining his defensive role.

With the summer window approaching, Plymouth’s position is clear. Mitchell is a priority target, but the final decision will rest with Charlton and whether they are willing to allow the defender to move on.
