Charlton Athletic are reportedly eyeing a move for former Sheffield United goalkeeper Adam Davies, as their latest target, according to London News Online.
Although the League One season only recently finished, Charlton are already making plans for next season as they hope to improve on their 16th-place finish.
One area the club is keen to develop is their options between the sticks, with the recruitment department reportedly aiming to bring in at least two more goalkeepers. According to the publication, one player they’re targeting is Wales goalkeeper Davies on a free transfer this summer.
How has Davies done in his career so far?
Davies started his career at Everton. He failed to progress into their first team but was a consistent performer in their reserve teams before moving to Sheffield Wednesday as a backup.
Davies left Sheffield Wednesday and joined fellow South Yorkshire team, Barnsley. It’s here his career took off, and he went on to play 209 games before departing for Stoke City, where he played 41 games.
Since signing for Sheffield United from Stoke City in January 2022, he’s played just 11 games. Last season, Davies just played once for Sheffield United in their EFL Cup defeat to Lincoln City.
Is Davies the answer for Charlton?
Although Davies hasn’t played much since his move to the Blades, there’s no doubt he’s got EFL experience. He’s made 121 Championship appearances and 103 League One appearances, with 80 clean sheets in those games.
His last season in League One was arguably the best season of his career. Davies helped Barnsley secure promotion back to the Championship. Individually, he was named in the EFL Team of the Season for League One and the PFA Team of the Year for League One. In that season he, played 42 League One games, keeping 19 clean sheets.
Davies is also capped at a national level, playing five teams for Wales. His first appearance came in 2019 after his impressive League One season. Despite not playing for his club this season, Davies did play 45 minutes against Gibraltar in their 0-0 friendly draw.
