Charlton Athletic Handed Boost As Coventry City Make Transfer Decision

Charlton Athletic have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Championship striker Matt Godden, with news that Coventry City are preparing to sell him this week.

The experienced forward is set to be sold by the Championship side this week amongst interest from two EFL sides, as the next chapter in his career creeps closer to beginning.

Godden featured as a squad option for the Sky Blues last season and has played an important role in the club’s rise from League One to being a penalty shootout away from the Premier League & FA Cup final.

How did Godden fare last season?

The 32-year-old received limited minutes for the Sky Blues last season, being stuck behind Ellis Simms and Haji Wright in the pecking order.

However, Godden still managed 41 appearances for Coventry in all competitions last season, scoring nine goals and providing an additional assist, taking his overall tally into double figures.

Which clubs are interested in Godden?

According to journalist Alan Nixon, Charlton Athletic remain in the hunt for Godden, especially considering the unclear future surrounding Alfie May with Huddersfield and Birmingham having bids accepted.

However, Nathan Jones’ side faces strong competition from Championship new-boys Oxford United.

Nixon has claimed that the Sky Blues will sell Godden this week as the majority of clubs return to pre-season, creating an intriguing battle between the two sides.

Would Godden replace May?

With Alfie May set to leave Charlton Athletic, Godden is a ready-made replacement for the forward.

The players are a similar age and Godden is also a proven goal scorer in League One, having featured for the likes of Coventry and Peterborough United.

Godden won the League One title with the Sky Blues during the 2019/20 campaign and has remained a reliable scorer in the Championship even despite his lack of consistent game time at the CBS Arena.
