Charlton Athletic have joined the growing list of clubs, considering a January swoop for a current National League midfielder to bolster their options moving into the second half of the campaign.
Nathan Jones’s side are currently 11th in League One and are on a five match unbeaten run in the third tier, which included a big win against the then-league leaders Wycombe Wanderers.
According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Charlton Athletic have become the latest side to be linked with a January move for Oldham Athletic midfielder Sam Clucas.
Fellow League One sides Mansfield Town and Lincoln City have also been linked with a move for the experienced midfielder who has a clause in his deal which would allow him to move this month.
How has he fared this season?
Following his departure from Rotherham United last summer, Clucas remained a free agent for a number of months before being snapped up by National League side Oldham Athletic.
With Micky Mellon’s side, Clucas has made six league appearances thus far, whilst also featuring in the National League Cup and the FA Cup, where he registered a goal contribution against Tranmere Rovers as well as one in mid-week against Eastleigh.
Oldham currently find themselves fifth in the National League, seven points behind the league leaders York City with a game in-hand.
Is this a good move?
Clucas has regained his match sharpness with Oldham Athletic and has proven that he can stay fit and deliver impressive performances.
All three League One sides are in a similar league position currently and have set their sights on signing a player who has over 200 Championship career appearances.
The midfielder has featured for both Mansfield and Lincoln previously which does give them a slight edge against Charlton, but Nathan Jones has proven with his summer additions that he isn’t afraid to spend money to get the players he wants.
His experience and depth could prove to be a vital asset for Charlton in their bid to reach the League One play-off places and if the figures are reasonable, this could be a sensible addition for Nathan Jones.
