Charlton Athletic Battle Championship Opposition for Star

Charlton Athletic

League One Charlton Athletic are prepared to fight off interest from Championship side Oxford United as well as title hopefuls Wycombe Wanderers for their defender Lloyd Jones, who is out of contract in the summer.

The former Liverpool man has played a key role for the Addicks this season, despite missing a chunk of the season in late October/ early November. He regained his place in the starting lineup to go on to make 18 League One appearances so far, appearing in every league game he has been available. The defender has also played 90 minutes in each, with the exception of his first game back after his spell on the sidelines.

He has previously been on the books of Liverpool, Swindon Town, Luton Town, Cambridge United and Northampton Town amongst others.

Jones’ contract is set to expire in the summer after the 29-year-old joined Charlton in the summer of 2023. This short amount of time on his deal has attracted interest from surprise title challengers Wycombe Wanderers as well as last season’s League One play-off winners Oxford United.

However, according to Alan Nixon, the club are set to resist the interest and are hopeful of tying him down to a fresh deal at The Valley.

Are Charlton Athletic Building Something Under Nathan Jones?

The Addicks were put by many as a potential promotion contender early on, with solid improvements under Nathan Jones last season, a decent transfer window (despite losing Alfie May) and a pre-season under their belt to further adapt to the former Luton Town man’s tactics.

But the first few months of the 24/25 season didn’t show the kind of improvement many had hoped for. Many of the same issues that had plagued them last campaign were still present, whilst the loss of May appeared to be bigger than first thought as the Addicks struggled for goals.

In recent games, there have been some signs of improvement, the club are 6th in the form table over the previous six games, behind the likes of Leyton Orient, Barnsley and Wycombe Wanderers. They sit in 12th, seven points behind the play-offs spots and could potentially put together a push over the second half of the table.
